5 Major Themes for the Cloud in 2012

  1. crystal-ball-2012Hybrid is the new black - and we're not talking cars. The amorphous cloud has certainly laid its claim to our hearts and minds, but the enterprises aren't going to just jump ship. Like the hybrid car strategy of marrying the known with the new, enterprises will adopt hybrid clouds that maintain the benefits of traditional servers with the accessibility of public cloud.
  2. Tablet, meet the other Jobs - the ones we go to everyday. 2012 is going to be all about how those slick devices we already use to read the news and watch movies will shift to become real business tools. And guess what, it's going to be executives, who, by the way love them, who will drive their use in the workplace. When the person in charge sees how useful something can be, they'll make sure it gets accepted.
  3. Offshoring it out, on-shoring is in - because the right people to do the job are often right here in the United States. With cloud commuting on the rise, employers are going to realize they can on-shore jobs in Iowa or Idaho instead of looking to India or Ireland. Pay an engineer the local wage, leave them at home, give them access to the tools of a cloud commuter and it's just like they're working from the corporate office.
  4. Freemium isn't really free - because while the end user might not pay, there are enormous costs for businesses who have to support the patchwork of mediocre products designed only to solve one person's problem, not solve an organizational problem. Not to mention the fact that it isn't a sustainable business model - designed only to pump up the numbers and give the appearance of size. Didn't we learn from the first dot com bubble?
  5. Cloud commuting... we dropped the "p" - because today's office doesn't have to be 4 walls and a water cooler. In fact, the cloud lets you sit in meetings, take calls, and read endless email strings you've been cc'd on just like you're in your cube. Between cheaper tablets / mobile devices, better productivity apps, easy internet access and acceptance of the cloud as a part of the corporate infrastructure, employers and employees can save corporations time, money and resources, with the added bonus of saving the world by staying off the roads.

Case Study of Santa's North Pole Strategic Operations Center

santas-case-studyIt was the night before Christmas when the North Pole's Strategic Operations Center lamented over the yearly decline of presents going to the right children at the right time. "More and more, mean kids are getting presents," lamented Fonzo Greenleaf, VP of Present Fulfillment. "We have the world's leading real time information consolidation platform to aid us in trans-continent operations, but the problem with all that 'Naughty or Nice' stuff is that Santa's long taken off with an outdated list, and we aren't able to synchronize our information with the Sleigh."

Says Fulzo Fixit, Director of IT, "These days, everyone's talking about going to the cloud. The Sleigh is a true cloud operator, but you'd think that going to the cloud means bringing your information with you. And Rudolph is no help - you'd think he's leading edge, but he puts the red light on everything that adds weight to the sleigh."

A salvo of angry and agreeing little elvish voices erupted.

Enter Egnyte HybridCloud, a next generation cloud solution that combines a Cloud File Server that is automatically synced with Local Cloud - an always available copy of your cloud files. With Local Cloud installed on the Sleigh, Santa now has full synchronization with cloud files maintained by the elves.

disgruntled-elves"Oh, it turns out he's naughty," Santa marveled, as he was about to mistakenly stuff himself down a chimney to deliver a magnificent present to a truly mean kid.  The process often risks carbon scoring, fabric damage and blockage of the recipient family's chimney. With Egnyte's solution, Santa was able to have the latest and greatest copy of "The List," saving him from many costly mistakes as well as the associated pain. "Egnyte has been a great boon to us," says Bonko Barkingdale, Head of Santa Chimney Extraction. "Each time Santa gets stuck down a chimney, our extraction team loses time and money - not even counting the cost of the present given to bullies or mean kids." Barkingdale further comments that ROI has been exceptional.

Says Fixit, "Now, with Egnyte, the right kids get the right presents, and we can further optimize the Sleigh's flight plan. Egnyte has been a great boost to our fulfillment strategy, overcoming costs and even politics."

Rudolph was not available for comment.
